The planned project on the topic of cocoa and chocolate, originally intended for teachers in the preparation of lessons, has already developed its objectives into a much more widely invested medium even at the planning and test stage.
It has given rise to an individually retrievable program with a storage capacity of approximately 460-MB, which can be automatically run in sound and vision on any standard PC with a CD-ROM drive. The Desktop is set-up to be self-explanatory, i.e. by clicking on the question mark help explaining each individual step appears. The modular choice of topic is possible through clicking on the buttons or a table of contents. The editorial structure is divided into "Text and Picture" (a window for illustrations with picture texts and a text window with a "Scroll Function") as well as in "Film and Sound" (a window opens for the auto-play film-excerpts with sound).
On the Topic of Multimedia Applications on CD-ROM:
When there is talk about a Multimedia-Project then it should also be capable of fulfilling all current demands. For this reason the CD-ROM: "About the Nature of One the Good Things in Life From the Cacao Tree to Chocolate", which has been completed in the meantime, really is a true multimedia application. On the one hand it combines a multitude of different topic areas taking into account text, photos, graphics, tables and diagrams and on the other hand contains suitable film-excerpts with sound on the topic. You go 'Live' into the Cologne Chocolate Museum to learn about the history of chocolate. The visit to a cocoa plantation is as vivid as it is interesting and, of course, this also applies to the glance into the processing of the cocoa as well as the various stages of production in the chocolate factory
All this alone would result in the "Multimedia-Objective" being achieved. But the user is also offered many and diverse possibilities in the practical application. Each text can be printed out in manuscript-form text by means of a command key. This also applies to all the illustrations, which visually augment the text. Every image can be printed out with an explanatory key to the picture. Thus for example, with the aid of a standard colour printer the opportunity is presented of automatically producing an individual overhead projector film for a lecture.
